Mountain Ash Comprehensive school is now a Level 1 Rights Respecting School. We were the first comprehensive school in RCT to achieve this. We are working really hard towards our level 2 achievement. We as a Rights Respecting School believe that all children should be able to enjoy and know their 42 rights which are set out in the United Nations Convention For The Rights Of The Child (the UNCRC). The School Senedd and Rights Respecting Steering group are working towards making sure all pupils at Mountain Ash Comprehensive School know their rights.
We had a wonderful opportunity to perform a presentation to the children’s commissioner for Wales (Sally Holland). Also at the end of 2016 and at the start of 2017 we had two live webinars with Sally Holland, where we typed questions into the laptop and Sally answered them for us. Also we have created, with the help of several teachers, a whole school rights charter so that we can focus on one right each month. We have also a rights charter designed by pupils with the help from Mrs Miles and Mr Donovan. Tammy Cowell was also involved in designing our logo.
We have in our plans for the future to be going to all of the Primary schools in the local area to inform and educate younger pupils on their rights before they join us in MACS in the future years.
By Tammy Cowell and Olivia Griffiths (MACS pupils).
