At Mountain Ash Comprehensive School, pupil leadership is a central part of our commitment to the Curriculum for Wales and our belief that young people learn best when they are active participants in their education and community.
The Curriculum for Wales places strong emphasis on learner voice, agency and responsibility, and our pupil leadership opportunities allow learners to experience this in a meaningful and authentic way. Through leadership roles, pupils are empowered to influence decisions, support others and contribute positively to school life, helping them to develop as confident, capable and responsible individuals.
We are extremely proud of the wide range of leadership opportunities available at MACS. These roles support learners in developing the skills, attitudes and values that sit at the heart of the Four Purposes:
Becoming ambitious, capable learners who are ready to learn throughout their lives
Developing as enterprising, creative contributors who play a full part in life and work
Growing as ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the wider world
Becoming healthy, confident individuals, ready to lead fulfilling lives
Our pupil leaders model the MACS values in their everyday actions:
Motivated – taking responsibility and showing commitment
Ambitious – striving to improve themselves and the school community
Caring – supporting others and leading with empathy and respect
Self-Aware – reflecting on their impact and developing as leaders
Across the school, pupil leaders help promote an environment where everyone is Ready, Respectful and Safe, acting as positive role models both in lessons and beyond the classroom.
Through roles such as Digital Leaders, MACS Mentors, School Librarians, our School Council (Senedd), Form Captains and School Sports Teams, learners develop leadership skills while strengthening their sense of belonging, responsibility and civic pride. These opportunities allow pupils to work collaboratively, communicate effectively, and contribute to decisions that affect their learning and wellbeing.
Pupil leadership at MACS is not about titles or badges – it is about preparing learners for life beyond school. By developing confidence, resilience and social responsibility, our pupil leaders are equipped with the skills and values they need to thrive in further education, employment and as active members of their community.
We are incredibly proud of our pupil leaders and the positive impact they make every day.
