World Book Day/Week

We are excited to announce that World Book Day will continue to run this year at Mountain Ash Comprehensive School. As with many aspects of school life, the event has moved online and Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils will be invited to a World Book Day Google Classroom on Monday 1st March. Despite the official World Book Day being celebrated on Thursday 4th March, we have decided to celebrate the event for the entire week on the classroom from the 1st to the 5th of March.

Once pupils have accepted the invitation to the Google Classroom, they will be able to engage in an array of activities and competitions online with regular updates throughout the week from Miss Turner (Deputy Director of English/Literacy Lead) and Mrs Simonov (Skills and Life Long Learning Officer). There will be five competitions in total that are on the ‘Classwork’ tab for pupils to access, they include: dressing up as a favourite character, writing an acrostic poem, writing a Harry Potter spell, an emoji book quiz and ‘The Masked Reader’. The Masked Reader competition comprises of many disguised members of staff reading an extract from a book. Pupils will be awarded ClassCharts points for guessing the member of staff and/or the book correctly. Pupils who engage in activities and competitions will be awarded ClassCharts points throughout the week and Amazon vouchers will also be given to the winners of each of the five competitions. In addition to the competitions, there are also ‘just for fun’ activities available on the classroom as well as images of staff reading and dressing up as their favourite fictional characters.

Hopefully, the event will promote the enjoyment that reading brings pupils, parents and staff alike.

Accelerated Reader now available online for Years 7 and 8

Correspondingly, Miss Turner and Mrs Simonov have recently set up a new Accelerated Reader Google Classroom that all pupils in Years 7 and 8 have been invited to through their school Google mail email addresses. The classroom provides pupils with help and guidance on how they access Accelerated Reader from home as well as a plethora of eBooks that pupils can read and quiz on. Please ensure that pupils have accepted the invitation so that they can access all the benefits that the classroom and Accelerated Reader have to offer.

If you have any further questions with regards to either World Book Day or Accelerated Reader, please do not hesitate to Miss Turner or Mrs Simonov at school. We hope that pupils are looking forward to next week’s event as much as we are!
