WE Day, the SSE Arena, Wembley, London (March 7th 2018)

Thirty-six MACS pupils and staff will shortly be attending the ‘WE Celebration Day’ at Wembley Arena, London. The world-wide movement will be rewarding our pupils for their social conscience and charity work in the local community. The pupils will hear motivational speeches and be treated to performances from pop stars. Previous speakers and performers at the event have included Prince Harry, Kate Winslet, Malala, Jessie J, the Vamps and Fleur East (to name just a few). 12,000 pupils and teachers from across the UK will be in attendance. MACS will be one of just five Welsh schools attending through the First Give program.

As a result of the Religious Studies departments work in launching the ‘First Give’ charity project in MACS last year, the winning finalists (year 10) have been invited to attend this unique (no tickets for sale) event. Our pupils won £1,500 in grants which were awarded to Women’s Aid, TEDS and the Cynon Valley PALS to assist them in their charity work. Just twenty-three pupils raised a further £480 which was donated to ADREF, Age Concern Morgannwg and the Little Princess Trust.

MACS PeaceJam Ambassadors have also been invited to attend. Last year, four of our Y11 pupils attended the PeaceJam UK conference at the University of Winchester. Here they gave a presentation to Leymar Gbowee, the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, regarding their work promoting peace in MACS through the hugely successful WAM (We Are More) program, launched by Mrs. Allen (Head of Drama/PSHE).

Our Head Boy/Head Girl and the Religious Studies A2 Level group have also been invited to attend. As well as assisting Mr. Church/Miss. Summers with the First Give final at MACS in July, they have helped raised £287 in the annual Christmas charity raffle. The proceeds were donated to the Cynon Valley PALS to assist in the cost of taking a group of disabled children to the pantomime in Cardiff. The pupils have also already raised a further £120 towards MACS hosting a tea dance event for the local old age pensioners later this year. We have a surprise singer (with a UK Top 40 hit album) eager to assist in this event!

WE day promises to be a once in a lifetime event for our pupils and the excitement is already building!

All that remains now, is to see who will be revealed in the star-studded line-up for March 7th!
