Nobel Peace Laureate to mentor Y10 MACS pupils!

Nobel Peace Laureate to mentor Y10 MACS pupils - Jade Driscoll, Georgia Parfitt, Ilayda Waters and Carrieanne Lougher!

The Religious Studies Department has selected the four pupils to represent MACS (along with Miss. Summers) at the PeaceJam UK Youth Conference to be held at the University of Winchester during March.

The pupils will meet and be mentored by the 2011 Nobel Peace Laureate Leymah Gbowee. She led a nonviolent women’s movement to end the Civil War in Liberia. The PeaceJam foundation is a leader in developing engaged, informed and compassionate young leaders who are addressing the root cause of issues in their local and global communities – including bullying, ignorance and injustice. The foundation provides a Bullying Prevention and Compassion in Action curriculum for schools. More information can be found at

Looking forward to the conference, Ilayda Waters stated:

“I am currently one of the first four WAM (We Are More – feminist group) Ambassadors at MACS. Our role is to promote gender equality/healthy relationships amongst girls around the school. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to be able to meet Leymah Gbowee – a Nobel Peace Prize Winner! It would definitely be extremely inspirational just to hear her life story and take on board any advice in order to make a change at MACS. It would be such a booster for WAM! What an eye opening experience!”
