Rights Respecting Schools Award
Mountain Ash Comprehensive School is working towards becoming a Rights Respecting School. A Rights Respecting School believes that all children should be able to enjoy the 42 rights which are set out in the United Nations Convention for the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). The school aims to shape all its work around ensuring that pupils can enjoy their rights. This does not mean that children are able to do what they want – it means that pupils are aware of the rights all children should have and teaches the children the responsibility of making sure that their friends and peers have the right to learn and feel safe in school. Members of the School Senedd act as Rights Respecting Ambassadors and help to promote this work in school. Earlier in the academic year they had a wonderful opportunity to take part in a webinar with the Children’s Commissioner Sally Holland. They asked her questions about the launch of this exciting award at MACS. They then took an active part in assemblies with Mrs. Mackie (Assistant Head) and Mrs. Pugh (Rights Respecting Coordinator) to launch RRSA.
In January 2017, Mountain Ash Comprehensive was awarded the Recognition of Commitment, which is the first stage of becoming a Rights Respecting School. The school will continue to work towards the next level of the Rights Respecting School Award by training staff further and raising awareness of rights in lessons and assemblies.
